After publishing my first blog post, I got many career-related queries from many of my friends, classmates. Some of them are –

  • How can I start my career as a UI Designer or Web Designer?
  • Which coding language or software should I learn or practice?
  • And many more.

So what I thought, to write a post which will be helpful for people who have similar queries.

In this article, I will try to cover all major points that are important for a UI Designer & also helped me to get my career started. If I miss anything, do let me know by adding a comment in the comment box.

So let’s get started with the first point –

1. Identify Your Niche –

The first thing I would really suggest you is to identify your niche – is it really UI/Web Designing? Or something else.

Identifying your areas of expertise in the early stage of your career can help you in many ways. It will help you to clarify your goals, passion & your potential. If you find yourself with the potential & willingness to work on various types of creative ideas and if you have a good understanding of design then I must say – you should start working on your skills to push yourself as a UI/Web Designer in the design industry.

2. Research & Learn To Develop An Designers Eye –

Designing is a process of constantly creating solutions for problems & this process can be learned. And for this, you don’t have to born with the essential skills. All you need to do is good research & learn to develop your eye for design.

You will need to train yourself to distinguish between good & bad designs. As well as, you would also need to develop your eye to identify the positive & negative points about the design.

In the industry, there are many areas & fields of design – Web design, UX design, Graphic design & many more. Figure out which area attracts you the most & start working on it.

3. Get Some Basic Knowledge About Design Principles –

When I say Design Principles, it means all the basic things about the design, by learning to which you will start thinking creatively. The design principle includes –

  • Color Harmony
  • Color Psychology
  • Typography
  • Design Layouts
  • Consistency
  • Selection of Pictures, Illustrations & Icons

Let’s dive into it.

A. Color Harmony –

According to color theory, color harmony is all about creating some decent color combinations by using basic color chords. Here are some widely used types of color chords –

  • Complementary
  • Monochromatic
  • Analogous
  • Split Complementary
  • Triadic
  • Tetradic

You can see these color chords working live here.

B. Color Psychology –

Colors are the objects that affect directly our mood & emotions in many ways. Similarly in the design world, wisely selected color schemes can send a clear message to the user & can affect his perception.

Color Psychology is all about the selection of a perfect color scheme that will reach to users & send a clearer message as written in the website content.

C. Typography –

Typography is all about arranging the text in your design to make the content in your design look more attractive. In typography, selecting fonts with good readability & the same design family can change the look & feel of your design.

D. Design Layouts –

Arranging layouts in a proper way can make your design look more attractive. The perfect combination of spacings, white spaces, layout arrangements & positions of CTA’s makes your designs look rich.

E. Consistency –

Maintaining proper consistency in the elements of your design will make your design more usable. In short, when you make your design consistent, it improves the usability & learnability for your users.

F. Selection of Pictures, Illustrations & Icons –

Selecting relevant & specific images or illustrations can convey the message easily to all your users that you want to share through our designs.

4. Learn The Creative Design Process –

Additionally, with basic principles of design, every creative designer must learn & follow the standard phases of design.  In the development stage, every design must be gone through these stages. It will improve the quality & usability of your design.

This creative process includes –

  • Research & Market Study
  • Wireframing or Briefing
  • Actual Design Development
  • Delivery & Feedback

Go through my detailed article – Useful Tips for Designing an Effective Website to read more about these design phases.

5. Learn Design Tools and Basic Web Design Languages –

Now, here is a question that many of my friends often ask – Which coding language or software should I learn or practice?

There are many tools available in the industry that can be learned & used to get started. But I would suggest learning only those tools/software that have high demand & are trending in the industry. I have made a list of these tools & software, so you can have a look & start learning in your early stage.

Here’s a list with their website URL –

In your early stage, it is not necessary to learn each & every tool but I would suggest learning Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator, as nowadays for a designer control over these tools is MUST in the design industry.

Many companies also prefer Coral Draw instead of Adobe Illustrator. So you can also consider this software to learn & have hands-on.

Apart from these tools, you must have a good knowledge of HTML, CSS, Responsive Web Design & WordPress, etc. Knowledge about scripting languages like JavaScript, jQuery can be a bonus point for you.  Also, you must be always aware of new & trending web technologies, frameworks.

6. Find A Good Mentor For You –

Finding a good mentor in any area of life will help you to find solutions quickly in any condition of your life. Similarly when entering the professional world to prove yourself, having a good mentor already leads you to get the right direction when you get stuck somewhere.

Your mentor must be a person who has already walked through a path you wanted to enter on. His review, guidance, tips & tricks will always push you towards improving the quality of your work.

Final Thoughts –

If you learn, practice & polish your skills & make yourself capable of working on some highly creative ideas then nothing can stop you from entering & achieving your desired goals in the design industry.  Just be consistently in the process of learning & practicing. This is the only thing which can make you a good designer.

So these are the steps from my side which I hope you will find useful. If you are a professional designer who has been working since long in the design industry, then comment down your recommended steps which I missed to include in my list.
